Call for Papers

SPIRE 2014 will be the 21st edition of the International Symposium on
String Processing and Information Retrieval, and will be organized by
the Department of Computer Science of the Universidade Federal de Ouro
Preto, in the town of Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The conference
will be held in conjunction with the 9th Latin American Web Congress,
LA-WEB 2014. SPIRE 2014 will also feature a full day of tutorials and
a full day of workshops. Ouro Preto is located approximately 100 km
from Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais in
Brazil. Famous for its magnificent well-preserved Portuguese colonial
architecture, Ouro Preto was the first city in Brazil to be declared
World Cultural and Historical Heritage Site by UNESCO. The 18th- and
19th-century churches decorated with gold and Baroque sculptures make
the city a prime tourist destination.

SPIRE 2014 will invite submissions in two categories: long papers (12
pages) and short papers (6 pages). Submissions should be anonymous and
formatted using LNCS style. At least three reviewers will evaluate
each paper based on its originality, quality and significance of
theoretical and/or practical contribution, the validity and robustness
of the used methodology, and the overall contribution to our
understanding of the context of the work.

The scope of SPIRE includes not only fundamental algorithms in string
processing and information retrieval, but also application areas such
as computational biology, DNA sequencing, and Web mining. Given its
interdisciplinary nature, SPIRE offers a unique opportunity for
researchers from these different areas to meet and network. For this
reason interdisciplinary papers are encouraged. Typical topics of
interest include, but are not limited to:

Dictionary algorithms
Text searching, Pattern matching
Text and sequence compression
Succinct and compressed indexing
Automata-based string processing
Analysis of DNA and RNA sequencing data
Molecular sequence processing
Recognition of genes and regulatory elements
Comparative genomics and population genetics
IR Models
Indexing
Ranking and filtering
Interface design for IR
Evaluation issues in IR
Text analysis, Text mining
Text classification and clustering
Information extraction
Language models for search related-tasks
Efficient implementation of IR systems
Algorithms and data structures for IR
Cross-lingual information retrieval
Multimedia / multi-modal IR
Recommender systems
Collaborative filtering
Semi-structured data retrieval
Sentiment Analysis and Polarity Detection

All papers will be refereed according to the usual scientific
standards. Papers must be in English, must be unpublished, and must
not be under submission to another conference or journal for the
entire duration of the reviewing process. Accepted papers will appear
in the Proceedings published by Springer Verlag in the Lecture Notes
in Computer Science series, which will be distributed to all delegates
at the symposium. Papers should be submitted to the spire account at
EasyChair, linked through the SPIRE 2014 paper submission Web site
(http://www.decom.ufop.br/Spire-La-Web2014/). By submitting a paper,
its authors commit to having the paper presented at the conference by
at least one of them; an accepted paper will not be published in the
proceedings, and will thus be removed from the programme, if none of
its authors have registered for the conference by the time the
camera-ready copy of the paper is due (25 July, 2014).
