This is a special issue containing extended versions of selected papers from this year’s edition of the SPIRE-conference series (International Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval); the special issue is, however, open to other submissions,
provided that the topics fall within the scope of SPIRE. Topics of interest range from string algorithms, text indexing, combinatorial pattern matching, data compression, to computational biology and algorithmic aspects of information retrieval. For more information,
