The Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies<https://www.santannapisa.it/en> in Pisa is seeking expressions of interest by potential candidates to contribute to a project concerning with the “design and implementation of new algorithmic and AI-based solutions for compression and code-based searches in the Software Heritage Archive<https://www.santannapisa.it/en/news/progetto-software-heritage-archive>”.

The Software Heritage Archive<https://www.softwareheritage.org/> (shortly, SWH) is an ambitious non-profit initiative launched in 2015 by INRIA (the French National Research Institute for Digital Science and Technology) in collaboration with UNESCO and several prestigious sponsors, including Microsoft, Google, VMWare, GitHub, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. SWH is a revolutionary infrastructure that collects, preserves, and shares all the history of software development into a huge (labeled) graph, ideal for massive and sophisticated scale analysis. To date, SWH is the world's largest archive of source code with more than 21B files originating from more than 330M projects, written by more than 85M coders. Interest in SWH and its source code is growing in the AI/ML research community, e.g., to build pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) for code generation and summarization, as well as to train LLMs on both natural language and code to boost their performance on logical reasoning, structured understanding, and various technical tasks. SWH provides an unprecedented opportunity for addressing a broad spectrum of needs – from code development to plagiarism detection and tracking, from AI model training to provenance and attribution of generative AI output, to cybersecurity, and more.
