Student Conference on Mathematical
Foundations in Bioinformatics
MatBio 2017<https://nms.kcl.ac.uk/informatics/events/MatBio2017/>

King’s College London, UK
September 14, 2017

The students of the Algorithms & Bioinformatics group at King’s College London invite research students to submit abstracts to present their work at the second
International Student Conference on Mathematical Foundations in Bioinformatics, sponsored by the Department of Informatics at King’s College London and the
London Mathematical Society.

Aims:

The aim of this Conference is to enable communication between early stage pioneers in the field and showcase applications of combinatorics, statistics and
general mathematical principles to solving problems in Bioinformatics. It is expected this will inspire professional networking, collaboration and future advancements in
the careers of the postgraduates involved; and it will also promote the sharing and development of methods and approaches to problem solving.

Venue:

MatBio 2017 will take place in King’s College London, situated in the heart of London: Lecture Theatre 1, Bush House Building

Scope:

Topics include, but are not limited to:
 Sequence analysis
 Sequence alignment
 Genome assembly
 Genome rearrangement
 Genome evolution
 Gene identification/annotation
 Interaction (protein-protein, gene-protein etc.) network graph algorithms

Structure:

Each session of this one-day conference will feature an invited talk followed by oral presentations by students. Breaks will provide the opportunity to network; lunch will
be hosted in a local restaurant. Students will be awarded for exceptional presentations.

Invited Speakers:

Stilianos Arhondakis, Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece

Talk: Compositional strategies for the exploitation of the transcriptome during biological processes/conditions using RNA-seq technology

Knut Reinert, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Freie Universität Berlin, Berlin, Germany

Talk: Engineering meets algorithms

Giovanna Rosone, Department of Informatics, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy

Talk: TBA

Prudence Wong, Department of Computer Science, University of Liverpool, UK

Talk: TBA

Submissions:

We invite students to submit abstracts to be considered for oral presentation by 14 July 2017, using this form: Abstract Submission.<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSctqwUVwQwBWJY0kW-Qo8rXuLEZYpttZTWO9I1hejK-0TfcMQ/viewform>
